#1166 · state_flag
Historical flag of Georgia used from 1956 to 2001, with a blue hoist panel bearing the state seal and a large Confederate battle emblem across the fly.
Georgia used this state flag from 1956 until 2001. The design was credited to John Sammons Bell and combined a blue hoist stripe with the state coat of arms and a Confederate battle emblem across the rest of the field. It was adopted by the General Assembly in the political aftermath of Brown v. Board of Education and became a major source of controversy, with supporters presenting it as a statement of Southern heritage and critics condemning it as a symbol tied to slavery, segregation, and white supremacy. The flag drew sustained national attention, including during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and was replaced in 2001.
This flag is a former version of Georgia.
Coat of arms specified
A law stipulated that the state’s coat of arms be added to the blue band, though researchers found no surviving flags with that exact design.
Seal date changed on flags
After the state seal’s date changed from 1799 to 1776, flag designs displaying a date beneath the coat of arms followed suit.
Current flag adopted
The legislature adopted a design with the state seal, thirteen stars, and a layout based on the Confederacy’s Stars and Bars.
Voters affirmed current design
In a statewide referendum, voters chose the 2003 design over the 2001 flag.
