#1162 · state_flag
Historical flag of Georgia featuring a vertical blue hoist stripe beside three horizontal bands of red, white, and red.
Georgia's first official state flag was adopted in 1879 and used until 1902. Its design paired a vertical blue hoist stripe with red-white-red horizontal bands, echoing the first national flag of the Confederacy while omitting its stars. The flag was introduced by State Senator Herman H. Perry as a memorial to Confederate soldiers who fought in the Civil War. In 1902 the design was amended by adding the state coat of arms to the blue field, ending this plain version.
This flag is a former version of Georgia.
Coat of arms specified
A law stipulated that the state’s coat of arms be added to the blue band, though researchers found no surviving flags with that exact design.
Seal date changed on flags
After the state seal’s date changed from 1799 to 1776, flag designs displaying a date beneath the coat of arms followed suit.
Current flag adopted
The legislature adopted a design with the state seal, thirteen stars, and a layout based on the Confederacy’s Stars and Bars.
Voters affirmed current design
In a statewide referendum, voters chose the 2003 design over the 2001 flag.
