The flag of Mississippi features a dark blue central panel bordered by narrow gold stripes and outer red stripes, with a white magnolia blossom encircled by white stars and a gold star above, plus the motto “In God We Trust” below.
Mississippi adopted its current flag on January 11, 2021. The design is known as the New Magnolia flag. Its magnolia blossom refers to the state flower and symbolizes hospitality, hope, and rebirth. The circle of twenty white stars marks Mississippi as the 20th state admitted to the Union, and the gold star honors the Indigenous peoples who first inhabited the land. The flag replaced the 1894 design, which had included Confederate symbolism, after legislation in 2020 required a new flag without the Confederate emblem and with the phrase “In God We Trust.”
