#1167 · state_flag
Flag of the State of Georgia used from 2001 to 2003, featuring a dark blue field with the state seal in gold, encircled by thirteen white stars, above a gold scroll reading “Georgia’s History” and the motto “In God We Trust.”
Georgia used this state flag from January 31, 2001, to May 8, 2003. Its design placed the state’s gold-colored coat of arms within a ring of thirteen white stars representing the original thirteen colonies, with a scroll below showing earlier Georgia and United States flags. The flag was adopted as a compromise replacement for the controversial 1956 design and was widely criticized for its complexity, extensive detail, and inclusion of text. It was replaced in 2003 by Georgia’s current flag.
This flag is a former version of Georgia.
Coat of arms specified
A law stipulated that the state’s coat of arms be added to the blue band, though researchers found no surviving flags with that exact design.
Seal date changed on flags
After the state seal’s date changed from 1799 to 1776, flag designs displaying a date beneath the coat of arms followed suit.
Current flag adopted
The legislature adopted a design with the state seal, thirteen stars, and a layout based on the Confederacy’s Stars and Bars.
Voters affirmed current design
In a statewide referendum, voters chose the 2003 design over the 2001 flag.
