#1164 · state_flag
Historical flag of the State of Georgia used from 1906 to 1920, featuring a blue hoist panel with the state coat of arms and a red-white-red striped fly.
Georgia used this state flag from 1906 until 1920. Its design placed the state coat of arms on a blue field, with the coat of arms showing three Greek-style pillars for the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, a colonial soldier with a sword representing defense of the Constitution, and the motto “Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation.” In 1920 the coat of arms on the flag was replaced by the state seal.
This flag is a former version of Georgia.
Coat of arms specified
A law stipulated that the state’s coat of arms be added to the blue band, though researchers found no surviving flags with that exact design.
Seal date changed on flags
After the state seal’s date changed from 1799 to 1776, flag designs displaying a date beneath the coat of arms followed suit.
Current flag adopted
The legislature adopted a design with the state seal, thirteen stars, and a layout based on the Confederacy’s Stars and Bars.
Voters affirmed current design
In a statewide referendum, voters chose the 2003 design over the 2001 flag.
