#1165 · state_flag
Historical flag of Georgia featuring red-white-red horizontal stripes with a blue hoist panel bearing the state seal in white.
Georgia used this state flag from about 1920 until 1956. The design combined a red-white-red triband with a blue canton containing the state seal encircled by thirteen white stars, representing Georgia as one of the original Thirteen Colonies. The seal depicts an arch for the Constitution, three pillars for the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, a wreath, a colonial soldier with a sword, and the motto "Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation." It replaced an earlier coat-of-arms flag and was superseded in 1956 by a new state flag.
This flag is a former version of Georgia.
Coat of arms specified
A law stipulated that the state’s coat of arms be added to the blue band, though researchers found no surviving flags with that exact design.
Seal date changed on flags
After the state seal’s date changed from 1799 to 1776, flag designs displaying a date beneath the coat of arms followed suit.
Current flag adopted
The legislature adopted a design with the state seal, thirteen stars, and a layout based on the Confederacy’s Stars and Bars.
Voters affirmed current design
In a statewide referendum, voters chose the 2003 design over the 2001 flag.
