The flag of North Carolina features a blue vertical hoist panel with a white star between gold letters N and C, gold scrolls dated May 20th 1775 and April 12th 1776, and two horizontal fly stripes of red over white.
The current flag of North Carolina was adopted on March 9, 1885 and later modified on June 24, 1991 to fix its official proportions at 2:3. Its design was introduced by Johnston Jones and William G. Browne, replacing an earlier 1861 state flag. The date May 20, 1775 commemorates the disputed Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, and April 12, 1776 marks the Halifax Resolves, which authorized North Carolina’s delegates to vote for independence.
