Flag of the British Virgin Islands: a British Blue Ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and the territorial arms on the fly.
The flag of the British Virgin Islands was adopted on 15 November 1960 as a defaced British Blue Ensign in 1:2 proportion. It was revised in 1999 when the shield was enlarged and given a white outline. The arms show Saint Ursula holding a flaming gold oil lamp and surrounded by eleven additional lamps, symbolizing her 11,000 virgin followers, from whom the islands took their name. The motto "Vigilate" is Latin for "be watchful."
