The flag of Trinidad and Tobago features a red field crossed diagonally by a broad black band edged in white from the upper hoist to the lower fly.
The national flag of Trinidad and Tobago was adopted on 31 August 1962 at independence and was designed by Carlisle Chang. Its red field, black diagonal band, and white borders were chosen to symbolize fire and the sun, the earth, and water respectively, with associated ideas including courage, vitality, dedication, unity, strength, purity, and equality. The design replaced earlier colonial British blue ensigns and is known as the “Sun-Sea-Sand Banner.”
