The flag of Guyana, known as the Golden Arrowhead, features a green field with a large gold triangle edged in white and a smaller red triangle edged in black, both pointing from the hoist toward the fly.
Guyana adopted this flag on 26 May 1966, the day it gained independence from the United Kingdom. It was designed by Whitney Smith, with the black and white fimbriations added later. The flag is nicknamed the Golden Arrowhead. Its colors symbolize forests and agricultural land, mineral wealth and a bright future, rivers and waterways, the zeal and sacrifice of the people, and their endurance and perseverance.
