The flag of Papua New Guinea is divided diagonally into a red upper triangle and a black lower triangle, with a gold bird-of-paradise above five white stars of the Southern Cross.
Papua New Guinea adopted this flag on 1 July 1971, and it was confirmed at independence on 16 September 1975. The design was created by Susan Karike after a national competition. The Raggiana bird-of-paradise represents cultural heritage, freedom, and the unification of the country's diverse peoples. The Southern Cross symbolizes the nation's location in the southern hemisphere and its historic ties to Australia. Red and black are traditional tribal colors, associated with bravery, the people, and volcanic soil.
