The flag of Rwanda features three horizontal bands of light blue, yellow, and green, with a golden sun in the upper fly corner.
The current flag of Rwanda was adopted on 31 December 2001 and was designed by Alphonse Kirimobenecyo. It consists of sky-blue, yellow, and green horizontal bands in a 2:1:1 ratio, with the blue band twice the height of the others, and a golden sun with 24 rays in the upper fly corner. The colors symbolize happiness and peace, economic development and mineral wealth, and hope and natural resources. The sun represents enlightenment, national unity, and transparency. It replaced the earlier post-independence red-yellow-green flag with a black “R” and was introduced as a symbol of reconciliation, unity, and a new beginning.
