The national flag of Malawi is a horizontal black-red-green triband with a red rising sun centered in the top black stripe.
Malawi adopted this flag on 6 July 1964 at independence. The black stripe represents the indigenous African people, the red stripe commemorates blood shed in the struggle for independence, and the green stripe symbolizes the country’s natural environment. The rising red sun signifies the dawn of freedom and hope for Malawi and Africa. A modified version was used from 2010 to 2012, after which the original 1964 design was restored.
