The flag of Niger is a horizontal orange-white-green tricolor with an orange disc centered in the white band.
The flag was designed in 1958 and adopted by the Territorial Assembly on 23 November 1959. It was retained as the national flag when Niger became independent on 1 October 1960. The orange band is associated with the Sahara and the sun, the white band with purity, and the green band with the fertile southern lands and hope. The centered orange disc is commonly interpreted as the sun and also as a symbol of independence. The flag’s proportion is 6:7.
