The flag of Sierra Leone is a horizontal tricolor of green, white, and light blue.
Sierra Leone adopted this flag on 27 April 1961, the day the country gained independence from Britain. Its colors were drawn from the national coat of arms. The green represents agricultural lands, hills, mountains, and natural resources; the white stands for unity and justice; and the blue represents the Atlantic sea and the natural harbour of Freetown, while also expressing hope for peace. The flag replaced the colonial British Blue Ensign used before independence.
