The flag of Cape Verde features a deep blue field with narrow white-red-white horizontal stripes across the lower middle and a ring of ten yellow stars offset toward the hoist.
Cape Verde adopted this flag on 22 September 1992. The design is credited to Pedro Gregório. The ten yellow stars represent the nation’s ten main islands. The blue bands symbolize the Atlantic Ocean and the sky, while the white-red-white stripe represents the road toward nation-building, with white for peace and red for effort, sacrifice, and resolve. The design marked a break from the country’s earlier 1975–1992 flag, which used pan-African colors derived from the PAIGC flag.
