The national flag of North Korea features a broad red horizontal band bordered by thin white stripes and wider blue stripes, with a red five-pointed star inside a white disc near the hoist.
The flag of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea was adopted on 8 September 1948. Its design is credited to Soviet advisers and was later explained by Pak Il. The red stripe has been associated with revolutionary struggle and blood shed in the anti-Japanese movement, the white bands with Korean ethnic purity and unity, the blue bands with the surrounding seas, peace, and international solidarity, and the red star with socialism and the guiding role of the Workers’ Party. The official proportions were 1:2.
