The national flag of Liberia features eleven horizontal red and white stripes with a blue canton bearing a single white star.
Liberia adopted this flag on 24 August 1847. Its design was intentionally modeled after the flag of the United States. The eleven stripes commemorate the eleven signatories of the Liberian Declaration of Independence. The blue canton represents the African continent, and the single white star symbolizes Liberia’s status as the first independent Western-style republic in Africa. The design was selected by a committee of women, who used a star in place of a cross. Liberia has been a member of the United Nations since 1945.
