Varaždin County

Varaždin County’s documented flag tradition includes an 1797 red-white-red triband bearing the coat of arms and a Madonna, followed by an 1848 version in the same tradition. In 1995 a new design was adopted, later replaced in ceremonial use by a red gonfalon edged and fringed in gold with the county coat of arms centered and the county name shown above. The county arms were granted in 1763 by Empress Maria Theresa and reflect historic heraldic elements associated with the region.
