Flag of Extremadura featuring three equal horizontal stripes of green, white, and black with the regional coat of arms placed slightly toward the hoist.
The flag of Extremadura emerged in the mid-1970s during Spain’s transition to democracy and was first publicly displayed on 14 November 1976 in Oliva de la Frontera. It is recorded in writing on 27 February 1977, was later sanctioned by the Junta Preautonómica, incorporated into the Statute of Autonomy in 1983, and regulated by the law of symbols in 1985. Martín Rodríguez Contreras is widely credited as its creator. The green, white, and black stripes have been associated with hope, the character and environment of the region, and the memory of hardship and historical legacy. The official government version includes the coat of arms, while a plain tricolor is used as a civil flag.
