The flag of Serbia is a horizontal red, blue, and white tricolor with the national coat of arms placed slightly toward the hoist.
Serbia uses a red-blue-white horizontal tricolor in the Pan-Slavic colors, a combination associated with Serbian flags since the uprising against Ottoman rule in 1804 and officially recognized in 1835. Variants of the tricolor continued through the royal period and later state forms. The current state flag, with the lesser coat of arms placed toward the hoist, was adopted on 17 August 2004 and standardized in 2010 after Serbia's independence in 2006. The coat of arms expresses medieval statehood, royal heritage, and the traditional ideal of national unity.
Arms and stars added
The state flag gained Serbia’s coat of arms on the blue band and four stars on the red band; the plain tricolour remained the civil flag.
Ottoman stars removed
After Serbia gained independence, the four stars symbolizing Ottoman suzerainty were removed from the state flag.
State flag with arms adopted
Serbia adopted state and civil flag versions: the state flag placed the lesser coat of arms on the tricolour, while the civil flag remained plain.
Current design standardized
The flag’s colours and design were standardized, with a visual redesign of the coat of arms used on the state flag.
