National flag of Turkmenistan with a green field, a red ornamental carpet stripe at the hoist, and a white crescent with five stars in the upper fly.
The flag of Turkmenistan was introduced on 27 September 1992 after independence from the Soviet Union. Its green field is associated with life, prosperity, peace, land, and the country’s Islamic heritage. The five carpet guls represent the five major Turkmen tribes: Teke, Yomut, Saryk, Chowdur, and Arsary. The crossed olive branches symbolize Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality. The white crescent signifies hope and a clear future, and the five stars represent the country’s five provinces. An olive wreath element was added on 19 February 1997, and the current detailed arrangement was finalized on 14 February 2007.
