The national flag of South Sudan features horizontal black, red, and green stripes separated by narrow white bands, with a light blue triangle at the hoist bearing a yellow five-pointed star.
The flag was first adopted on 9 July 2005 for autonomous Southern Sudan and was retained on 9 July 2011 when South Sudan became independent, with a slight adjustment to the blue shade. The design is derived from the flag of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement. Its colors symbolize the South Sudanese people, the blood shed for independence, peace, agricultural wealth and progress, the White Nile, and the unity of the country’s ten constituent states.
