History
The current flag of the Chechen Republic was adopted in 2004. Its green, white, and red bands symbolize Islam and the mountainous landscape, peace and purity, and the blood shed in the republic’s history. The central ornamental motif represents traditional Chechen cultural heritage and has also been associated with the ruling Kadyrov clan. Earlier Chechen flags included Soviet-era designs and the green-red-white flag used by the separatist Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in the 1990s.
