The flag of Guinea-Bissau features a red vertical band at the hoist with a black five-pointed star, alongside two horizontal bands of yellow over green.
The flag was adopted on 24 September 1973 at the proclamation of independence and became the national flag after Portuguese recognition in 1974. Its design derives from the banner of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, retaining the red, yellow, and green palette and the black star while omitting the party initials. The colors follow the Pan-African tradition: red recalls the blood shed in the struggle for freedom, yellow represents the sun and harvest, green signifies hope, forests, and agricultural wealth, and the black star symbolizes African unity and the leadership of the independence movement.
