History
The current national flag of Belarus was adopted on 7 June 1995 and slightly altered in 2012. It consists of a red field over a green field with a red ornamental pattern on a white vertical stripe at the hoist. The design derives from the 1951 flag of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, with the communist symbols removed and the ornament’s colors reversed. After independence in 1991, Belarus briefly used the white-red-white flag before a 1995 referendum restored the red-green scheme with the national decorative motif.
