The flag of Vanuatu features a red upper field and green lower field divided by a yellow Y-shape bordered in black, with a black hoist triangle bearing a gold boar’s tusk and crossed namele fronds.
The national flag of Vanuatu was adopted on 18 February 1980, shortly before independence on 30 July 1980. Its design was created in 1977 by local artist Kalontas Malon and drew on the colors associated with the Vanua’aku Pati. The red, green, black, and yellow colors carry national symbolism, while the boar’s tusk represents prosperity and the namele fronds refer to peace and the original 39 members of Parliament.
