The white-over-red flag of Thuringia was introduced with the creation of the state in 1920 and formally adopted in 1921. Its colors reflect the historic heraldic colors associated with the Ludovingian rulers of the medieval Duchy of Thuringia. The flag was abolished in 1935, reinstated in 1946, removed again in 1952, and readopted on 3 October 1990 after German reunification, with legal regulation confirmed on 30 January 1991. The plain bicolor serves as the civil flag, while the state flag adds the coat of arms centered on the field.
