History
Monaco adopted this flag on 4 April 1881. Its red and white colors are the heraldic colors of the House of Grimaldi and have been associated with Monaco since at least 1339. Earlier Monegasque flags used related colors with older coats of arms, while the modern version uses a simple bicolor design.
