History
North Rhine-Westphalia was formed in 1946. Its green-white-red tricolor was introduced in 1948 and formally adopted in 1953. The plain tricolor serves as the civil flag and state ensign. Its colors combine the historic colors associated with the Rhineland and Westphalia, expressing the unity of the state's constituent regions.
