Hesse uses a red-over-white horizontal bicolor in a 3:5 proportion. This design dates to the post-war constitution of 1946 and was formally codified in 1948. The plain red-and-white version is the civil flag, while the state service flag adds the Hesse coat of arms. The colors reflect the historic hues of the House of Hesse.
