The flag of Senegal is a vertical green, yellow, and red tricolor with a centered green five-pointed star on the yellow band.
Senegal adopted this flag on 20 August 1960 after independence. Its design follows the format of a French-style vertical tricolor and replaced the flag of the Mali Federation. The green, yellow, and red colors are associated with pan-African identity. Green is linked with Islam, hope, and fertility; yellow with wealth, progress, and artistic prosperity; and red with sacrifice, life, and determination. The green five-pointed star symbolizes openness to the five continents and is also associated with spiritual values, light, knowledge, and hope.
