The national flag of Cameroon is a vertical green-red-yellow tricolor with a single gold five-pointed star centered in the red band.
The tricolour design was first hoisted on 29 October 1957 and retained after independence on 1 January 1960. On 1 October 1961, two yellow stars were added in the green band to represent the federation of French and British Cameroons. The present single-star version was adopted on 20 May 1975 when Cameroon became a unitary republic. According to the cited sources, green symbolizes the southern forests, yellow the northern savannas and the sun, red the link and unity between north and south, and the central star represents national unity.
