The flag of Burkina Faso features two equal horizontal bands of red and green with a centered yellow five-pointed star.
Burkina Faso adopted this flag on 4 August 1984, after the 1983 coup that brought Thomas Sankara to power, replacing the former Upper Volta tricolor of black, white, and red. The red band symbolizes revolutionary struggle and the blood shed for liberation, the green band represents agriculture, vegetation, and hope, and the yellow star stands for the guiding light of the revolution, leadership, and mineral wealth. Its red, green, and yellow palette reflects Pan-African colors, and the design is believed to have been inspired by the flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam.
