The national flag of Guinea is a vertical tricolor of red, yellow, and green.
Guinea adopted this flag on 10 November 1958, shortly after independence from France on 2 October 1958. Its vertical tricolor format recalls the French tricolor, while its red, yellow, and green colors align with the Pan-African palette associated with African independence movements. The colors are commonly understood to represent sacrifice and the blood shed for freedom, the country’s mineral wealth and the sun, and the fertile land and solidarity of the people. The design is also the reverse color order of Mali’s flag.
