The national flag of Mali was first introduced on 4 April 1959 and has been used in its current plain tricolor form since 1 March 1961. It uses the Pan-African colors: green for fertility and agriculture, gold for purity and mineral wealth, and red for the blood shed in the struggle for independence from France. An earlier version displayed a black kanaga figure centered on the gold stripe, but it was removed in 1961.
