History
The flag of Saarland was adopted in 1957 when Saarland rejoined the Federal Republic of Germany. It uses the black, red, and gold national colors of Germany with the state coat of arms centered, following a common pattern among German state flags. The quartered arms represent the historic territories of Nassau-Saarbrücken, Trier, Lorraine, and Palatinate-Zweibrücken.
