State flag of Peru, a red-white-red vertical triband with the national coat of arms centered on the white band.
The flag of Peru was established in its present vertical red-white-red form on 25 February 1825. The state flag uses this triband with the national coat of arms in the center; the current state version was formally adopted on 31 March 1950. The red bands symbolize the blood shed in the struggle for independence and national bravery, while the white band represents peace, purity, and unity. The arms depict a vicuña, a cinchona tree, and a cornucopia of gold and silver coins, symbolizing freedom, natural wealth, medicinal resources, and mineral riches.
