History
Montenegro adopted this flag on 13 July 2004. It has proportions of 1:2 and standardizes a red field with a gold border and the national coat of arms at the center. The design revives the historic royal banner and was retained after Montenegro became independent in 2006. The coat of arms features a golden double-headed eagle bearing a shield with a golden lion passant, symbols linked with Montenegro’s medieval Byzantine and royal heritage and the Petrović-Njegoš dynasty.
