The flag of Saxony-Anhalt is a horizontal gold-over-black bicolor with the state coat of arms centered.
The flag of Saxony-Anhalt was adopted on 30 January 1991 and later confirmed in the state constitution on 17 July 1992. Its gold and black colors recall the historic palette of the Province of Saxony and the earlier state of Saxony-Anhalt. The centered coat of arms combines symbols of the historic territories of Saxony and Anhalt. The order of the colors was reversed in 1991 to distinguish the flag from that of Baden-Württemberg. From 1991 to 2017, a plain civil version without the coat of arms existed alongside the state flag; the plain version was later withdrawn to avoid confusion.
