State flag of Bolivia with red, yellow, and green horizontal stripes and the national coat of arms centered.
The current horizontal red-yellow-green arrangement was adopted in 1851 under President Manuel Isidoro Belzu and later confirmed by an 1888 decree defining the colors and their order. The state version adds the national coat of arms in the center; the coat of arms was added in 1888 and last revised in 2004. Red represents the blood shed in the struggle for independence, yellow symbolizes mineral wealth and natural resources, and green stands for fertility, forests, agriculture, and hope. In 2009, Bolivia’s constitution recognized the Wiphala alongside the tricolor as a co-equal national emblem.
