The flag of São Tomé and Príncipe features green-yellow-green horizontal bands, a red triangle at the hoist, and two black five-pointed stars centered on the yellow stripe.
The national flag of São Tomé and Príncipe was adopted on 12 July 1975 at independence from Portugal. Its design is derived from the flag of the Movement for the Liberation of São Tomé and Príncipe, with the horizontal stripe proportions adjusted to 2:3:2. The design is associated with Manuel Pinto da Costa. The green symbolizes the islands’ vegetation, the yellow the tropical sun and cocoa production, the red triangle equality and the struggle for independence, and the two black stars the two principal islands and the African population.
