National flag of Zimbabwe with seven horizontal stripes of green, gold, red, black, red, gold, and green, plus a white hoist triangle bearing a red star and the Zimbabwe Bird.
Zimbabwe adopted this flag on 18 April 1980 at independence. The green represents agriculture, gold represents mineral wealth, red recalls the sacrifices made in the struggle for majority rule, black represents the people, and the white triangle stands for peace and unity. The red star symbolizes aspirations for freedom and progress, and the Zimbabwe Bird refers to the soapstone bird associated with Great Zimbabwe and the country’s pre-colonial heritage. The overall color scheme reflects pan-African colors, and the design derives from the flag of ZANU-PF.
