The flag of Equatorial Guinea is a horizontal green, white, and red tricolor with a blue hoist triangle and the national coat of arms centered in the white band.
Equatorial Guinea adopted its flag at independence on 12 October 1968, originally without the coat of arms. The present form, restored on 21 August 1979 after a period in which a different emblem was used, features green for natural resources, agriculture, and jungle, blue for the sea linking the mainland and islands, white for peace, and red for the blood shed in the struggle for independence. The coat of arms includes a silk-cotton tree, six stars representing the mainland and five principal islands, and the motto “Unidad, Paz, Justicia.”
