The national flag of Nepal is a crimson double-pennon with a blue border, bearing a white crescent moon in the upper triangle and a white twelve-rayed sun in the lower triangle.
Nepal’s flag is the world’s only national flag that is not rectangular. Its design combines two traditional triangular pennants into a single national flag, a form associated with earlier kingdoms in the Kathmandu Valley and unified national rule after the rise of Prithvi Narayan Shah in the 18th century. The modern version was standardized in 1962, when the sun and moon were simplified by removing facial features and the exact geometric construction was codified. The crimson field represents bravery and also evokes the rhododendron, while the blue border symbolizes peace, harmony, and the sky. The moon and sun express endurance and are also linked to the lunar and solar dynasties.
Current design adopted and standardized
The flag was standardized and adopted in its current form, with the faces removed from the sun and crescent emblems.
