The flag of East Timor features a red field with a large yellow hoist triangle, a smaller black hoist triangle, and a white five-pointed star within the black triangle.
The national flag of East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, was adopted on 20 May 2002 upon full sovereignty. Its design is based on the flag used by Fretilin during the 1975 independence declaration and later became a symbol of resistance during the Indonesian occupation. The red field represents the struggle and sacrifice for national liberation, the yellow triangle the traces of colonialism in the country’s history, the black triangle the obscurantism and hardships to be overcome, and the white star peace, hope, and a guiding light for the future.
