The national flag of the Czech Republic features two horizontal bands of white and red with a blue triangle extending from the hoist.
This design was first adopted in 1920 for Czechoslovakia and was later retained by the Czech Republic in 1993 after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. The white and red are traditional Czech colors associated with Bohemia and Moravia, while the blue triangle was originally added to represent Slovakia and to distinguish the flag from Poland’s; in Czech use it is also described as symbolizing impartiality, sovereignty, and the historic unity of the Czech lands.
White-over-red flag used
Czechoslovakia used a white-over-red flag before adopting the blue-triangle design.
Blue-triangle flag adopted
On 30 March, Czechoslovakia adopted Jaroslav Kursa’s design, with a blue triangle extending halfway across the flag.
Occupation-era flag replaced it
During the German occupation, the flag was banned and a white-red-blue horizontal tricolour was used instead.
Czech republic used bicolour
Within the federation, the Czech Republic adopted a white-over-red flag without the blue triangle.
Current flag adopted by Czech Republic
The independent Czech Republic retained the Czechoslovak flag, which its state-symbols law made the national flag from 1 January.
