National flag of Eritrea with a red triangle from the hoist, green upper triangle, blue lower triangle, and a gold olive wreath emblem near the hoist.
The current flag was first hoisted on 24 May 1993 following Eritrea’s independence and was formally standardized on 5 December 1995 in a 1:2 proportion. Its three-color layout echoes the flag of the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front, while the gold olive-branch emblem derives from the Eritrean flag used from 1952 to 1962. Green represents agriculture and livestock, blue represents the bounty of the Red Sea, and red commemorates the bloodshed of the thirty-year struggle for independence. The wreath contains thirty leaves to symbolize those three decades of armed resistance.
