The flag of the Philippines features blue and red horizontal bands with a white triangle at the hoist bearing a golden sun and three gold stars.
The national flag of the Philippines was created by Emilio Aguinaldo and adopted in 1898 after the proclamation of independence. Its design consists of two equal horizontal bands of blue and red with a white equilateral triangle at the hoist containing a golden eight-rayed sun and three five-pointed gold stars. The white triangle symbolizes liberty, equality and fraternity and also recalls the emblem of the Katipunan. The blue stripe represents peace, truth and justice, while the red stripe stands for patriotism, courage and valor. The sun's eight rays commemorate the first eight provinces that rose against Spanish rule in 1896, and the three stars represent Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao. In times of war, the flag is displayed with the red stripe above the blue.
Official flag adopted by law
Act No. 2928 adopted the Philippine flag as the official flag of the Philippine Islands.
Flag specifications standardized
Executive Order No. 23 specified the flag’s proportions and elements, including a plain sun and equilateral triangle.
