National flag of Malta featuring a vertical white-and-red bicolor with the George Cross outlined in red in the upper hoist corner.
The flag of Malta was officially adopted on 21 September 1964 in a 2:3 proportion. Its white and red colors derive from the emblematic colors associated with the Order of St John, which influenced Maltese heraldry. The George Cross in the upper hoist corner commemorates the award granted in 1942 by King George VI to the people of Malta for extraordinary bravery during the Second World War. A blue canton used earlier was removed at independence, leaving the cross outlined in red. The design is notable as the only national flag bearing English-language text, the words "For Gallantry" on the George Cross.
